QSC joins impressionists at La Nouvelle Athenes
Cafe where Degas painted L’Absinthe (and Cole Porter wrote night & day) reopens after major refurbishment
Paris, France, April 2008 … La Nouvelle Athènes was once a legendary café on Paris’ Place Pigalle, known for its cabarets. It was a meeting place for famous impressionists painters including Monet, Manet, Degas, Pissarro, Seurat and Sisley, who used to live nearby. In fact L'Absinthe by Degas, now in the Musée D’Orsay, was painted in this café in 1875.
In the 1930’s the venue was a base for some of the world’s most famous jazz musicians (Cole Porter writing some of his best-known compositions there) — but in 2004 the café was destroyed. However, three years later a complete refurbishment was undertaken with the result that La Nouvelle Athènes has now reopened — as a three-floor venue, with contemporary architecture and large picture windows.
Live jazz and blues remain the central theme on the ground floor, and this is relayed to a QSC ceiling system in the 200-seat gastronomic brasserie (and cocktail bar) up on the first floor.
The QSC solution was recommended by Patrick Barrier, from Paris-based PAT Music, and supplied by QSC Audio’s French distributors, Sennheiser France.
Patrick chose QSC’s AcousticDesign™ ‘C’ Series because he was looking for a sound system supplying a true ‘high fidelity’ sound with good sound pressure level and high volume; he also knew that the QSC brand represented reliability.
Distributed across the upper ceiling levels are 15 QSC Audio AD-CI52ST and five AD-CI52T, powered by QSC’s ISA and RMX amplifiers.
These speakers employ a 5.25" weather-resistant LF transducer incorporating a low distortion fibreglass cone, a 25mm voice coil, and a rubber surround. The HF driver is a 1" pure titanium dome tweeter utilising a neodymium magnet structure.
With its larger, ported enclosure, the AD-CI52ST provides greater low frequency extension and is an excellent solution for installations requiring shallow install depth. By contrast, the AD-CI52T has a smaller footprint — enabling this speaker to be less visually intrusive.
Both fit wonderfully into the design aesthetic of La Nouvelle Athènes — which is open every day of the week from 10am-2am (except Sundays).
